2 sheets of newspaper per team

Space to run (non-carpeted floors are best)

1 chair per team (optional)

Divide players into teams of two or more.

Have teams line up relay style at one end of the playing area.

Give each team a pair of "snowshoes" (sheets of newspaper)

Players place the snowshoes on the floor and use them to slide their feet along as they race to the other end of the playing area and back.

When the first player on the team returns to the start, they pass the snowshoes to the next player and so on.

Place a chair at the "far" end of the playing area for players to race around.

Cut the newspapers (ahead of time) into snowshoe shapes instead of leaving them square.  Let the girls try both ways and discuss which worked best (and why).  Relate their observations to the design of real snowshoes.

If space and resources permit, give each player their own snowshoes and just have a straight race.
